Fishing Report

For the Week ending 18th June 2017

After peaking the Pan at 600cfs last week, it is now running at 130cfs! The water is being diverted to the Front Range for a while so they can keep their lawns green in the over-developed dry flat lands. The water will stay here for a little until they decide to push more water down to the endangered fish later on. So for the moment the Pan is a great destination while everything else is blown out. The forecast is for hot weather for the next week so we are approching the peak flows in the Fork. Today at 3500cfs, the Fork his a new high and that will continue for a little while meaning the only place to fish is the Pan. As a matter of interest, our great friend Davide just wrote an article about the Frying Pan and the Roaring Fork in an italian/english magazine this month.

Frying Pan

Current Flow: below the Dam 135cfs.(if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page)

The Pan ran at 600cfs for several days and now has been cut back to 135cfs. The fish will be a little disconcerted and will be moving into the deepest shaded sections where they can get some cover from the birds of prey and the bright sunny days. The wading is easy so the fish will be pushed back into the most protected areas. This will be the only good destination for 100's of miles as the freestones approach their peak flows.

Recommended Flies:Use midges, bwos, and egg patterns.

For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis.

The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22.

As they come off try the gray loopwing emergers #20 - #22, the FPA special emergers, biot emergers both with and without the trailing shuck and gray RS2's #18 - #22, Johnny Flash in Olive, Grey, and Black, Olive and Red Jujubee, trailing shuck midge black and cream.

In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26.

The fish are taking generic nymphs such as pheasant tails and caddis larva patterns. The BWO's are coming off as well. Try emerger patterns such as rs2's and WD-50's.

For BWO naturals use standard BWO's, parachute BWO's, parachute Adams, and Thorax patterns.

Roaring Fork

Current Flow: near Emma - 4000cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page).

Full blown run-off at the moment. So wait for the Pan to settle down by the end of the week after the co-ordinated releases finish.


Colorado

Don't bother to think about it unless you just want a very fast raft trip. Just come up to the Frying Pan at the end of the week.
