Fishing Report

For the Week ending 21st May 2017

The weather forecast was correct and we woke up on Thursday to 8 inches of snow on the deck. The temperature dropped and the snow/rain continued most of the day and into next morning. As a consequence, the snow pack jumped from median to 20% above median. It is still not at the level it was last year but it was a nice augmentation to the flow.

The flow in the fork has dropped back to 815cfs leaving it in good condition for the next day or so before the heat picks up. The forecast is for variable weather with temperatures in the 60's for the coming week. So although the melt won't pick up quickly, expect the Fork to deteriorate lower down as the week progresses. So the most reliable destination by next weekend with be the Frying Pan.

Frying Pan

Current Flow: below the Dam 250cfs.(if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page)

With the flows at 250cfs for the moment the conditions are good. However expect the flows to pick up as this is the time that the Bureau starts to push up releases for the co-ordinated flows for the endangered fish.

Recommended Flies:Use midges, bwos, and egg patterns.

For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis.

The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22.

As they come off try the gray loopwing emergers #20 - #22, the FPA special emergers, biot emergers both with and without the trailing shuck and gray RS2's #18 - #22, Johnny Flash in Olive, Grey, and Black, Olive and Red Jujubee, trailing shuck midge black and cream.

In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26.

The fish are taking generic nymphs such as pheasant tails and caddis larva patterns. The BWO's are coming off as well. Try emerger patterns such as rs2's and WD-50's.

For BWO naturals use standard BWO's, parachute BWO's, parachute Adams, and Thorax patterns.

Roaring Fork

Current Flow: near Emma - 815cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page).

The flows are relatively clear at the moment and Jordan reported good streamer fishing on the Fork in the colder weather with the clearer water. This will persist for another few days, but expect the flows to pick up as the week progresses and temperatures remain above freezing over night at the higher elevations. By next weekend just head to the Pan.


Colorado

The flows in the Colorado have trebled in the past week. Despite the colder weather, it has not cleared much and the flows remain higher. Don't bother to think about it unless you just want a very fast raft trip. Just come up to the Frying Pan.
