As predicted the weather warmed and the melt continued. It was sufficient with some wind to color up the Fork a little lower down. This weather is forecast to persist now for the next 10 days. The snow pack is still holding up 130% above the median and last year, but we will need some more snow before it warms too much to ensure that the snowpack maintains its condition. It has been quite windy over the past few days - typicial equinoxial conditions. And that has begun to affect the snow at the higher elevations.
So over the next week it is possible that the color will persist a little in the Fork and the Colorado. But the Pan will remain in excellent condition.
Frying Pan Another good week of fishing on the Pan with the warm weather persisting. The hatches were good giving good dry fly action. The fish took mostly emergers but break the surface taking dries. The fish were generally active at all levels of the water column. The coming week promises more great fishing and with the snow in spring conditions it is worth taking a day off to get in the water and enjoy these good conditions. Recommended Flies:Use midges, bwos, and egg patterns. For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis. The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22. In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26. The fish are taking generic nymphs such as pheasant tails and caddis larva patterns. The BWO's are coming off as well. Try emerger patterns such as rs2's and WD-50's. For BWO naturals use standard BWO's, parachute BWO's, parachute Adams, and Thorax patterns.
Roaring Fork Current Flow: near Emma - 278cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page). The fishing conditions were ideal as the weather warmed. However with the consistent warmer weather and the windy conditions by Sunday there was a little color in the Fork as the latest snows melted off quickly at lower elevations. With the forecast for similar weather over the next week, the color may remain as the flow picks up. Try small baetis such as the FPA Sparkle Baetis, the FPA Thorax Emerger, and black pheasant tails have also worked well. For emergers, the rs2 in black or gray. Also the sparkle wing rs2. For small flies, copper johns, pc phlash, mercury rs2's, pheasant tails, bubble back bwos.
With a little warming weather there was a touch of color in the Colorado over the weekend but the visibility was still good and the fishing solid. Try small flies, attractor patterns, streamers and egg patterns. Try small flies, attractor patterns, streamers and egg patterns. Recommended Flies: Generally the way to go is nymphing with small baetis, the FPA sparkle baetis, sparkle rs2's and biot emergers. For stonefly nymphs use the BTB Hot Spot 20 Incher, rubberleg patterns such as Mike's BTB Coffee/Black and the Halloween Speckled Girdle Bug, with midges, worms and small baetis patterns behind the lead fly. Try streamers as well. |
