A cold break arrived this week with some more snow and freezing temperatures. The snow was welcome adding the the snow pack which was dropping a little back to 135% of the median. The forecast is for a few more days of snow and then back to warmer weather in the 50's.
The cold snap slowed down the fishing a little on the lower pan but higher up and on the Fork there were good reports this week. The coming week promises more good days out as the temperatures warm a little.
Frying Pan The cold break froze the river surface in some of the slower sections and put a little more snow on the river banks. But a couple of warm days and it will all be gone and back to great conditions. Recommended Flies:Use midges, bwos, and egg patterns. For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis. The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22. In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26. The fish are taking generic nymphs such as pheasant tails and caddis larva patterns. The BWO's are coming off as well. Try emerger patterns such as rs2's and WD-50's. For BWO naturals use standard BWO's, parachute BWO's, parachute Adams, and Thorax patterns.
Roaring Fork Current Flow: near Emma - 278cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page). The warm weather has melted a lot of the ice in the more exposed areas. The coming week will offer more good fishing as the temperatures will remain above freezing during the days. Concentrate on smaller flies, worms, attractors and egg patterns.
The condition of the Colorado is excellent at the moment. The little snow higher up did not have any impact lower down. The river is clear. Try small flies, attractor patterns, streamers and egg patterns. |
