The weather was magnificent today with the temperatures in the mid 50's. Ideal weather, and the fishing was excellent. A few days of warm weather has moved a lot of snow from the more exposed areas and made access to the river a lot clearer. The forecast for the coming week is for possibly 3 or 4 days of snow but temperatures will remain in the 40's. So although it may be damp, it will be comfortable out on the river and the fishing should be good.
Frying Pan The warmer weather cleared the banks nicely and removed a lot of the anchor ice in the wider sections. The fishing was good even down to mid river with the fish taking a variety of nymphs. The fish were low down so it was a matter and making sure the flies were close to the bottom. The fishing will be good in the coming week as the warmer temperatures will remain even though their might be some snow/rain. Dress appropriately and enjoy a good day out. Recommended Flies:Use midges, bwos, and egg patterns. For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis. The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22. In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26. The fish are taking generic nymphs such as pheasant tails and caddis larva patterns. The BWO's are coming off as well. Try emerger patterns such as rs2's and WD-50's. For BWO naturals use standard BWO's, parachute BWO's, parachute Adams, and Thorax patterns.
Roaring Fork Current Flow: near Emma - 278cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page). The warm weather has melted a lot of the ice in the more exposed areas. The coming week will offer more good fishing as the temperatures will remain above freezing during the days. Concentrate on smaller flies, worms and egg patterns.
The warmer weather has cleared the river nicely, particularly where it is more open. There is some good fishing now with the temperatures above freezing during the day. Try small flies, streamers and egg patterns. |
