Happy New year! We trust you had safe holidays. The days are getting longer at last!! Another cold week with little snow although there is the promise of some over the next 3 days. We need it. It has been relatively quiet in town over the holidays with some fishermen getting out and having a good time. We are starting our rounds of the Fly Fishing shows and next weekend we will be in Denver. So come by the booth if you are in the area. We would love to catch up. Merry Christmas to everyone and all the best for the new year.
The cold arrived this week, so now generally we are limited to fishing closer to the dam with midges and eggs. Recommended Flies:Use midges, bwos, and egg patterns. For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis. The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22. In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26. The fish are taking generic nymphs such as pheasant tails and caddis larva patterns. The BWO's are coming off as well. Try emerger patterns such as rs2's and WD-50's. For BWO naturals use standard BWO's, parachute BWO's, parachute Adams, and Thorax patterns.
Roaring Fork Current Flow: near Emma - 278cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page). The cold has arrived. The river has frozen in some places along the edges and the snow has made access more difficult higher up. We are now in winter conditions. Concentrate where the sun is shining. Concentrate on smaller flies, worms and egg patterns.
The Colorado is now in winter conditions. It was frozen over with a enough ice during the week to prevent boats launching. Generally head for the wider areas where the sun is shining. Check though with the current cold, ice is gathering in the slower sections. Try small flies, streamers and egg patterns. |
