Some more warm to hot weather and the flows have picked up significantly. The only good fishing for the moment is on the Pan where the Bureau pushed the flows up to a manageable 245cfs. We use the term "manageable" because lower down the Pan the flows are higher with the various tributaries contributing quite a volume of water and color at the moment. The fish were tending to stay lower over the past few days where the weather was hot and the skies bright and clear. We have had a little rain this morning and there is a chance of thunderstorms over the next few days as the temperature picks up. The clouds move through quickly so within the space of a few hours, clouds give way to bright sun and blue skies, only to transform again later with more clouds. So the key is to dress in anticipation of all weather. So in essence if you are planning to come up, the only reliable fishing will be on the Pan.
The Bureau increased the releases this week pushing the Pan up to a easy 181cfs. With the prediction of mid 70 temperatures in the coming week, the Pan will be the only good water to fish for a long way as the melt gathers pace. So check with the shop of the website before you come up to make sure the flows remain at this level for the moment. The freestones will be ugly. Recommended Flies:Use midges, bwos, nymphs and attractors. The fish are also taking small nymphs. For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis. The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22. In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26. The fish are taking generic nymphs such as pheasant tails and caddis larva patterns. The BWO's are coming off as well. Try emerger patterns such as rs2's and WD-50's. For BWO naturals use standard BWO's, parachute BWO's, parachute Adams, and Thorax patterns.
Roaring Fork Current Flow: near Emma - 898cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page).
Now the big browns are chasing streamers as well so take along your streamer gear for a change. Try small baetis such as the FPA Sparkle Baetis, the FPA Thorax Emerger, and black pheasant tails have also worked well. For emergers, the rs2 in black or gray. Also the sparkle wing rs2. For small flies, copper johns, pc phlash, mercury rs2's, pheasant tails, bubble back bwos.
With the flows pick up quickly, leave the Colorado alone at the moment. Unless we get a burst of colder weather which settles down the flows it won't be worth fishing.
