Apart from a brief colder spell and a passing cloud it has been warm and clear for most of the week. And the coming week appears to promise more of the same with temperatures predicted to be in the mid 50's during the day. The warm weather is making for some good fishing. There are BWO's coming off on the Fork in the later afternoon now offering some good dry fly fishing. Marty got out during the week and posted some examples of nice fish. The water conditions are excellent and are beginning to bring out a lot of locals. There were quite a few fishermen on the rivers this weekend as the quality of the snow diminishes and being on the river offers a pleasant alternative at this time of year.
The warm conditions persisted over the latter part of the week, and the promise is for more of the same in the coming week. The clear skies bring the temperatures down during the night, but it is very comfortable out on the river now as the daylight hours lengthen. There were a few midges hatching today giving a small window of nice dry fly action. But the strong flows and relatively deeper water are tending to keep the fish lower. The bright light also drives the fish lower in the very clear water. There were also a few BWO's coming off but the fish didn't seem to notice them. So if you are nymphing the fishing has been excellent. The hatches have been sporadic so it is a matter of catching them at the right time if you want to enjoy some winter dry fly activity. Recommended Flies:Use midges and eggs. For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis. The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22. In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26.
Current Flow: near Emma - n/acfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page). Though wintery conditions persist, the Fork remains in excellent condition with minimal ice buildup and hence great access for wading. This week we had reports of nice BWO hatches bringing the fish to the surface. Marty went out to investigate and indeed did enjoy some nice dry fly action in the afternoon. It is a great time to get out onto the Fork now with such sublime winter conditions. They should persist a little longer, but we do need some more snow to arrive soon. Recommended Flies: The best results on the Fork now are from nymphing. Mostly eggs and attractor patterns now. The browns are on the redds so try streamers and eggs below them. You can try small flies such as, copper johns, pc phlash, mercury rs2's, pheasant tails, bubble back bwos. Also try eggs and attractor patterns.
The Colorado is in great condition and should remain that way for now. Nymphing produces the best results. The fish are now responding to streamers and the browns are on the redds. Recommended Flies: egg patterns as well as some of the patterns suggested above for the Fork. Check out our new Frying Pan River Lodge. |
