Fishing Report

For the Week ending 25th January 2015

**********************************

With minimal snow over the past week, the weather has been excellent. It was a very comfortable 40degrees out on the river today. A few BWO's came off as well as a few midges but the hatches were not strong. There were quite a few fishermen out enjoying the exceedingly pleasant conditions. With a few visitors in town for the X Games, it was quite busy. A change from the past few weeks.

The weather over the coming week promises more warmth in the mid 40's and little to no snow, so there should be ample opportunities to get out onto the river, particularly if you are up here to ski and find that the icy conditions require a day or so to rest. A few hours out on the river is just the ticket.

Cameron has been in both Marlborough last week and New Jersey this weekend at the Fly Fishing Shows and has enjoyed making new contacts and meeting a lot of old friends. He will be at the North Carolina Feb 6and 7th show so if you would like to catch up with him, note it in your diary.

Frying Pan

Current Flow: below the Dam 103cfs.(if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page)

With the prediction of generally clear weather over the coming week it will be great to get out onto the river but take care to dress warmly. The clear overnight sky brings the temperatures down well below freezing so the mornings are cold. But in the sunlight things will warm in time.

With the strong flows, the fish are tending to stay a little deeper so if you are nymphing the fishing has been excellent. The hatches have been sporadic so it is a matter of catching them at the right time if you want to enjoy some winter dry fly activity.

Recommended Flies:Use midges and eggs.

For mysis at the dam use Mike's Mysis. epoxy mysis, and BDV mysis.

The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try Wilson's Reverse Candy Cane #20, red and black chironocones #20, nick's larva in miracle pink, olive, and purple back, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, rainbow warriors, black polywings #18 - #22 and bling midges # 18 - #22.

As they come off try the gray loopwing emergers #20 - #22, the FPA special emergers, biot emergers both with and without the trailing shuck and gray RS2's #18 - #22, Johnny Flash in Olive, Grey, and Black, Olive and Red Jujubee, trailing shuck midge black and cream.

In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, black cdc midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26.

Roaring Fork

Current Flow: near Emma - n/acfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page).

Though deep into wintery conditions, the Fork remains in excellent condition with minimal ice buildup and hence great access for wading.

Recommended Flies: The best results on the Fork now are from nymphing. Mostly eggs and attractor patterns now. The browns are on the redds so try streamers and eggs below them.

You can try small flies such as, copper johns, pc phlash, mercury rs2's, pheasant tails, bubble back bwos.

Also try eggs and attractor patterns.

For the stone fly nymphs good patterns continue to include the BB FB Epoxy 20 Incher, the BTB Hot Spot 20 Incher and the CTB RL Epoxy 20 Incher.

Colorado

The Colorado is in great condition and should remain that way for now. Nymphing produces the best results. The fish are now responding to streamers and the browns are on the redds.

Recommended Flies: egg patterns as well as some of the patterns suggested above for the Fork.
