Fishing Report

For the Week ending 13th November 2011

**********************************

The weatherman was accurate predicting that cold and some snow would arrive by this weekend. It has indeed been late autumn weather with blustery wind, a little snow and generally colder. The prediction for the coming week is similar weather with some days clear and colder while others carrying the possibility of some snow. Next weekend may bring a little more snow. With the onset of the colder weather the bug hatches are slowing with a few BWO's and midges but nothing prolific.

As the weather got colder during the week, the Bureau put the Pan up a little so that it is now running at 92cfs. With Ruedi still around 81% full it is looking great for the flows as the weather gets colder. It would be most welcome if the Bureau actually increased the flows in the coldest months of the year and it looks possible given the current level and the inflows around 40cfs. And with the announcement that Snowmass will open for some skiing this coming Saturday, we are reminded how close the season is to starting.

Some more good news during the week was the granting of the full building permit for the Whole Foods building in the Willits Town Center development. It is estimated that the development will be completed and the store will be open by June or July 2012.

If you are thinking of something different in this weather, at the San Juan Angler we have access to some private water where kokanee salmon are running. Have a look at this one. If you are in the area give the shop and call and we can arrange for you to go out. Their number is (970) 382 9978.

Frying Pan

Current Flow: below the Dam 92cfs. (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page)

The colder weather, wind and snow over the weekend kept the fish low and a little unsettled in the changing air pressures. There were a few fish rising but they were selective. Most results were from nymphing with either baetis nymphs or midges. The coming week will be similar so again the fishing will be intermittent and require one to dress for winter conditions. When there is a window of settled weather the BWO's will still come off nicely until the really cold weather hits and shuts them down until early spring. So if you are coming up, check the forecast and dress for winter conditions.

Recommended Flies:There is good fishing now on midges and BWO's.

The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try WD-40's #20, red and black chironocones #20, brassies #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, black polywings #18 - #22 and garcia's rojo midges # 18 - #22.

As they come off try the gray loopwing emergers #20 - #22, the FPA special emergers, biot emergers both with and without the trailing shuck and gray RS2's #18 - #22. In addition try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, suspended midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns in sizes from #20 through to #26, loopwing emergers #20 - #22 and FPA special emergers #20 - #26.

For baetis, try small nymphs such as pheasant tails, bubble backs, FPA sparkle baetis and rs2's. When the BWO's come off parachute adams and standard BWO patterns. Also try the parachute BWO and the thorax patterns. With the range of bugs coming off, larger BWO patterns will work well in the rougher water. Parachutes down to #12 will attract attention in the rougher water and will be effective.

Roaring Fork

Current Flow: near Emma - 364cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page).

The snow this week was a sparing so the flows in the Fork have settled a little from last week providing excellent clear water. There has been some good fishing in side channels as well as nymphing, particularly with eggs below the redds.

Recommended Flies: The best results on the Fork now are from nymphing using stonefly and baetis nymphs. Try egg patterns and streamers as well.

Colorado River

The Colorado continues to fish well nymphing as the cooler weather and clear flows have the fish feeding in the feeding lanes on baetis nymphs and emergers.

Recommended Flies: Big stonefly nymphs, rubberleg patterns, with small baetis patterns behind the lead fly.

The best rig is a big rubberleg first followed by a smaller emerger baetis or maybe nymph around #18 fished deep down.

Colorado River

The Colorado continues to fish well with Cameron continuing to report some excellent dry fly fishing while floating along the edges this week. Big browns were taking large generic dries well placed and offered some of the best dry fly fishing this year on the Colorado. It still fishes extremely well nymphing as the cooler weather and clear flows have the fish feeding in the feeding lanes on baetis nymphs and emergers.

Recommended Flies: Big stonefly nymphs, rubberleg patterns, with small baetis patterns behind the lead fly.

The best rig is a big rubberleg first followed by a smaller emerger baetis or maybe nymph around #18 fished deep down.
