Fishing Report

For the Week ending 15th February 2009

This past week there was a little snow over a few days which replenished the slopes nicely and made for some good skiing. However it did not get particularly cold, consequently lower down, the snow tended to melt off quite quickly leaving little trace by Sunday when the weather cleared.

The coming week is predicted to bring some more snow but the temperatures will be a little higher than the past week. Therefore, one would expect that any snow will melt away quickly if the last day or so is any indication. The forecast is also for the weather to clear by the end of the week, so if you are coming up next weekend, expect some good conditions.

Mike and Cameron have been conducting fly tying classes during the week in the evenings. The participants have been having a lot of fun in an informal environment. If you are in the area and would like to drop in during a class call the shop and find out which evenings the boys will be in the shop.

As the days stretch out we are moving towards spring. A lot more locals are coming by the shop to renew their licenses. You may not be aware, but the DOW has extended last year’s license so that renewal is now not required until the end of March. So if you are considering venturing out on the river but are considering the cost of your annual license in these tough times, you have 6 weeks of fishing before the necessary renewal must be done.

Frying Pan

Current Flow: below the Dam - 75cfs. (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page)

With the colder weather over the past week and a little more snow, the fishermen were not out on the river with the same frequency. The dry fly fishing was good with the fish taking grey biot midges #28 - #32 behind a #28 parachute Adams. By Thursday the snow was accompanied by a cold wind on the river making it quite cold for the day. However by the weekend it warmed nicely.

The prediction is for a little more snow over the next few days, but we shall see. As it appears most of the colder weather has passed us to the North recently. However despite the prediction of a little more snow, the temperatures look as though they will be a little warmer making for some more nice dry fly fishing.

The browns are still out on the redds near the dam but close to the end of their spawn. So take care of them and stay clear. There is no point standing on a redd dragging egg patterns across disturbing the spawning fish. It takes no skill to hook them and disturbs breeding patterns for next season.

Recommended Flies:  Now we are well into winter conditions, and the patterns will be predominantly midges and egg patterns. Try a worm pattern and a hare’s ear as well as an attracter for variety.

With the days noticeably shorter, it is now a matter of trying to follow the sun. When it is cloudy the distinction between light and shadow will be less pronounced but on a bright day, as soon as the sun goes behind any of the peaks it will get colder quite quickly and the midge hatches will abate.

As the conditions get colder it will be a matter of fishing to the depth of the fish. That will be key. If the fish are lying low just add weight to your midge patterns until you can drift the fly right to the fish.

The midges will come off during the day, particularly if it is sunny. So try WD-40's #20 , red and black chironocones #20, brassie's #18 - #22, midge larva patterns #18 - #22, copper johns #18 - #22, black polywings #18 - #22 and garcia's rojo midges # 18 - #22.

If the fish start moving higher in the water column or get active under the surface, try the gray loopwing emergers #20 - #22, the FPA special emergers, biot emergers both with and without the trailing shuck and gray RS2's #18 - #22.

When they are on the surface, try dry patterns such as the z-wing real midge, suspended midge and any similar dry black and gray patterns such as a parachute Adams in sizes from #20 through to #28.

Roaring Fork

Current Flow: near Emma - 229cfs (if you want more uptodate figures check out current readings on our "Links" page).

The small amount of snow over the past week is imperceptible at the rivers’ edge. Although a little colder than last week, it was still warm enough to cause the snow to immediately melt off at lower elevations. The midge hatches were a little more subdued for a day or so but with the prediction of warmer weather and a little more snow the cloud cover should ensure some nice comfortable temperatures over the coming week.

The spate of colder weather over the past week accompanied by only a little snow has caused the melt to slow a little. This is indicated by the fall in the flow over the last few days.

As the days warm and the edges of the river become more accessible there will be good fishing in the wider sections. The better fishing on the Fork is lower down towards Glenwood however over the past week there has been good access above Basalt as the recent warm weather has caused the edges of the ice to recede on the rivers edge bringing the fish out a little further.

Recommended Flies: Try midges and eggs as well as very small baetis nymphs and attractors such as princes and hare's ears.

For baetis try nymph patterns such as pheasant tails #18 - #24. For midges look at our suggestions for the Pan.

In addition try san juan worms, brassies, and copper johns.

Colorado River

The Colorado can offer some good winter fishing particularly down lower where the sun can get onto the water. Cameron and Mike floated down from below Glenwood last week and reported some nice fish on both nymphs and streamers.

Recommended Flies: BWO nymphs, emergers and dries; midge emergers and dries during the hatches, 20 inchers size #10 - #14; streamers #2 - #8, egg patterns.
