Introduction to
Fly Fishing Equipment.
We at Frying Pan Anglers take great pleasure in introducing anyone to the joy of fly fishing. Consequently we are now taking the time to produce some small articles for those of you who might not have had much experience of fly fishing. First we will summarize our view of the equipment you might acquire. Thereafter as the year progresses we will address a number of subjects pertinent to fishing in our area.
However, before we start there are a couple of rules which should be borne in mind. There are others of course but these jump to mind at the time of writing.
First Rule. Fly Fishing is meant to be fun. There are a lot of stuffy old so-called masters of the art who forget this basic message. Sure it can become as complex and as detailed as you like. It has often been said that you can learn to cast a fly in an hour and then spend the rest of your life perfecting it in the successful pursuit of your quarry. But if you stop having fun think about why you are doing it in the first place.
Second Rule. Respect your quarry. Obviously, we advocate catch and release. But more than that, learn to respect the fish, handle it as little as possible. Understand when and where the trout are breeding and steer clear or minimize your impact. In harsh conditions remember that the more energy expended by a fighting fish, the more it has to eat to replenish lost energy. Also at the height of the summer season when traffic is at its heaviest, understand that the fish need time to feed. Where it is possible to manage or control water, take care to ensure that the trout have adequate time to recover.
Third Rule. Be respectful. Respect other anglers on the river or the lake. Be courteous to your fellow fisherman. Try not to peer over his shoulder into his fly box or park yourself immediately adjacent to him as he successfully lands innumerable fish. Respect all property, private or public. We are all here on borrowed time.
But above all, enjoy yourself.
